The meme started in Electronic Musician Magazine. It was picked up by MetaFilter. That lead to an article in Newsday. The Baltimore Sun has come out to interview me. There should be an article in the Sun about recommendation systems.

A short post was placed on MobBlog maintained by the University College London.

A MOG user picked up the story and posted it to their blog. They pointed out an interesting study a that showed that music can affect human physiology. Those studies give credence to Zary Segall's original idea of XPod as a device that would control a users mind and mood. For the time my development goes the other way around, the user mood controls the device.

Here are a few posts about xpod in a languages that I cannot read:

http://www.dijitalnesil.com/?p=19.

podrobnosti.com.ua

e-news.com.au

homa.ucoz.ru

kurskcity.ru

A couple more posts about XPod

neowin.net

rihzome.org (Connecting Art and Technology)

A lot of the coverage of this paper has focused on the machine learning piece of this project. I am glad because I think that is actually the most interesting part of the project. The idea came from the way I listen to MP3's. I don't like playlists, so I just put my player on random and skip songs that I don't want to hear. This whole project is really a way for me not to have create playlists.

The neural network component of XPod did not perform as well as I would have liked. I am now replacing the neural network with a support vector machine. SVM's are the cool new kid on the machine learning block. I don't know much about them, but they seem to out perform almost every other algorithm. XPod will be reworked for my machine learning class. This class has a good track record for success. Last semester a student created a very successful sblog detection scheme that is now being perused by major blog search engines.

There has been a lot of discussion of XPod in the blogosphere, so I decided to setup a blog dedicated to just it.
